This shot is of 3 Sandhill Cranes (2 adult, 1 imm.) standing at the edge of a salt marsh in Mattapoisett, MA. Two cranes were reported in December in Westport, MA and individual cranes have been spotted along the S.E. Mass coast and in Rhode Island since November. On 1/15, Eddie Giles found these three birds together in neighboring Fairhaven, MA. Thanks to Joe Paluzzi and Steve Leonard for refinding these birds in Mattapoisett on the 17th. This image is just a minor blow up of the one above - showing that these are really cranes and not herons. |

This fuzzy shot was taken using our digital camera through the eyepiece of my Kowa TSN-4 scope. This is the immature bird. I probably could have gotten better images if the temp wasn't in the single digits with high winds blowing from the birds to me (note that the birds were smart enough to be behind a wind break). |

On 1/22/00, Susan and I returned to find the cranes in Fairhaven, MA, and took the following shots. These are the adults. |

It is tough to line up the camera with the perfectly. These birds were over 100m away. An adult (right) and the immature bird (left). |

I saw these birds again on 2/5/00 in Fairhaven. |

These pictures are a little better. Immature bird to the right, adults to the left. |

I know there's food somewhere down there! |

Well, maybe the food is better over there... |
