This is a photo of a ROCK WREN which showed up in Gloucester (Lanesville), MA in 1997. Rock wrens are rare in Massachusetts. Veit and Petersen (Birds of Massachusetts, 1993, Massachusetts Audubon Society, Lincoln, MA) list two previous records in the winters of 1965-66 (Rockport) and 1991-92 (Orleans). The normal range is in the western part of this country, the nearest breeding population is in the western Dakotas. The photo was taken by my wife, Susan Carlson, on 4/5/97.
